Every Check Had the Bride's Name — Part 3: Nine Years of Checks

Nine years earlier, Olivia had awakened in the cardiac intensive care unit after doctors restarted her heart.

Lucy was two, frightened by the machines, and spending each night with Marlene.

Olivia had already lived for two years with the lie she had told Ethan during their breakup.

She had claimed the baby was not his because she wanted the argument to end and thought rejecting him first would hurt less than being abandoned.

The photograph in Lucy's envelope had been taken before that lie, when Ethan still thought they might repair what was breaking between them.

After the cardiac arrest, Olivia decided Lucy deserved the truth even if Ethan never forgave her.

She asked Victoria, then a mutual friend, to contact him while Olivia remained too weak to leave the hospital.

Victoria did not make the call Olivia requested.

While Olivia had been unconscious, Victoria had told Ethan that Olivia died during the cardiac arrest, even though the doctors had not said that.

When Olivia confronted her, Victoria admitted she had wanted Ethan for years and warned that correcting the lie would expose Olivia's false denial about Lucy.

Victoria offered money for treatment and rent if Olivia let Ethan keep believing she was dead.

Olivia knew she could refuse, but she was ill, behind on rent, terrified of losing Lucy, and ashamed of the first lie she would have to confess.

The first check arrived before Olivia left the hospital.

Victoria called it help for medication, rent, and the weeks Olivia could not work.

It did solve real problems.

The second check arrived with Victoria's warning that the money would stop if Olivia contacted Ethan.

Later calls added a threat that Victoria would give Ethan proof of Olivia's parentage lie and help him use it in a custody fight.

Olivia moved across the state with Lucy to live near Marlene and allowed Victoria to become their only private connection to Ethan's world.
